October 23 -- November 21, 2010.

Bikkuri -- To be surprised or startled by something unexpected
“For it is owing to their wonder that men both now begin and at first began to philosophize; they wondered originally at the obvious difficulties, then advanced little by little and stated difficulties about the greater matters…”
-- without even needing to reference the words of Aristotle, it is evident that wonder or astonishment provides the driving force that moves us to question the world around us and to seek new understanding.  When an artist encounters new material, when an element of chance is brought into his artwork, and when that work begins to take shape ? on all of these occasions, various wonders and astonishments are necessary to move the process forwards. For the viewer too, the angles presented by the artist may represent a fresh viewpoint, one which comes from a place of wonder and has the power to shake his or her established world.

Though this surprise or wonder may not completely overturn the established order of things, within it are surely contained seeds of change, which will spread slowly and gradually throughout society.  The upcoming Artist in Residence Program, and its ensuing exhibition, will adopt this idea of “surprise” or “wonder” as its central theme.
