trans×form

10:00am - 6:00pm, July 27 - September 16, 2013 / Admission Free

The 2013 theme for the Artist in Residence (AIR) Program is that of "Exchange." "Exchange" is a word frequently used in everyday life in the literal sense of transferring goods or interacting with people. In AIR, artists come in contact gain new stimulation and venture to create new works in an "exchanged" environment. This environment is completely different from their own familiar atelier, from the size of the studio and the surrounding scenery to the tools at their disposal.
This exhibition will exhibit artists' productions created under the theme of exchange. Additionally, we took the word "transform," broke it down into its morphemes of "trans" and "form," and then rejoined the word to form "trans×form." "Trans" is a prefix which means to "surpass" or "convert" while "form" means "shape," "style," or "structure." By interchanging the different meanings of each morpheme, they can be interpreted in a variety of ways: to alter form, to transcend style, or to alter aspects, among other interpretations.
Artists carry out many exchanges and transformations throughout the production process. Not only do they convert the physical figures of material used in their works, but they also topple values and views attached to that object and can even transform the surrounding environment or scenery through their work. This exhibition focuses attention on the techniques and rules of each artist, who transform raw materials into works of art. While these four artists use commonplace objects seen in everyday life as materials in their works, they arm themselves with unique perspectives and groundbreaking methods of production which give a material or object new value by significantly altering its original form, appearance, or meaning. At times, these artists generate quality works with diverse interpretations by effortlessly diverging from even these methods of production. And those works pleasantly betray our images, prejudices, and preconceived notions of these materials and objects, stirring up new perceptions of the objects in the process.

By substituting their familiar surroundings for the completely foreign environment of Aomori, what will they discover and how will they be able to transcend already existing forms?

IWASAKI gives original form to his materials through a succession of extremely precise, detailed processes. One example is his work which resembles a tower-like steel structure by unraveling thread from a towel. By transforming the weak threads of a towel into the image of a tough, tenacious steel structure, he invites us to modify our perceptions of delicacy and strength.

One of his first major works was the audiovisual treat titled Vinyl, in which a record made of ice was cast in a silicon model and played on a record player as the record's grooves melted away, resulting in gradual alterations to its sound. He gives shape to an unseen phenomenon and poetically expresses why the physical object we know as a record emits sound by explaining its basic mechanism.

On the surface PAREKH's works appear suspended between the second and third dimensions, as if painted with a brush. However, upon closer inspection, one can discover the modest spatial effect created by layering materials, an effect entirely different from the touch of a paintbrush. Her unique 2D works appear three-dimensional by affixing layer upon layer of paper, each with a their own texture and color. As such, they possess both symbolic and abstract aspects and an organic sense of vitality.

MANUPIPATPONG generates a unique scale of work between architecture and furniture. His objects and spaces resemble the shape of a house and evoke images of various human behavior. Sometimes they function as spacious architecture, and other times they take on a role similar to clothing which wraps around the body. It is possible to physically touch and experience the art of his installation spaces, which give rise to a diversity of actions and build a shared space.
