Material and Mechanism

October 25 – December 14, 2014 10:00-18:00

Since 2011, the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) has established annual themes to capture the latest works and activities of its artists in residence (AIR) and other contemporary artists. In 2014, a variety of programs will unfold at the ACAC around this year’s annual theme of “Media/Art/ Society.” The first installment is KOKUFU Osamu solo exhibition "Floating Conservatory", and the second installment is Artist in Residence 2014/ summer “Media/ Art Kitchen—Reality Distortion Field—Aomori”.

In the third installment of this Artist in Residence 2014/ autumn "Material and Mechanism", we would like to approach artists' works and activities from the perspective of "Material and Mechanism". In the public invitation for the Autumn AIR, we would like to think about “media” from a more fundamental perspective: “media” as a “medium” of art. Artists’ inner ideas are externalized through the process of making artwork, their materials and mechanisms becoming the medium of expression. On the other hand, these materials and mechanisms often have their own meanings or may represent the artists’ thinking. Moreover, they can also act as catalysts that serve to further kindle artists’ creativity. Under the title “Material and Mechanism,” the Fall 2014 Artist in Residency (AIR) will contemplate the materials and methodologies of each artist’s residence production and the presentation of their distinct approaches in an environment where production and presentation happen alongside one another.

Born in 1977 in Yamaguchi, Japan. Graduated from the Graduate School of Film and New Media of Tokyo University of Art. The artist primarily experiments with “Animation Tableau”, an original method for creating animation, in order to discover new possibilities in surrealism. The narrative of ALIMO’s work always begins with a lonely scene or isolated words; it is the silence embedded in the loneliness that interests him the most. This solitude is reflected in the trace of existence which arises the space between everyday objects and cultural artefacts that, may be visible or invisible to our eyes yet, bind territory, faith and ownership altogether in his work.
