The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre [ACAC] kicks off its first AIR of 2016 with MANMANCHAN AN, a solo exhibition by O JUN. O JUN has gained attention for his unique style of representation, in which he expresses motifs that live in the instant between connection and disconnection, between coincidence and inevitability, before the genesis of meaning.
Scenes reminiscent of a familiar fragment in time, symbolic iconography such as crests and flags, distinct images with indistinct lines, strong visual margins, his characteristic glass sheets and heavy iron frames. The figurative images in his artwork, which interpret scenes of modern Japan from a peculiar point of view, seem to transform into meaningful, extraordinary moments in time.
MANMANCHAN AN, the exhibition title, is baby talk used in Osaka and other areas of Western Japan when reciting a prayer to the Buddha. But the phrase’s sound and infantile status detach it from its original religious context and render the words almost meaningless. They are juxtaposed against the innocence of childhood and the silly puns of stand-up comedians from yesteryear and become mere sounds whose meaning has dissolved in midair. Sense and nonsense merge midair in the title, as they often do in O JUN’s works.
O will install and exhibit his past artworks, including oil paintings and his signature iron-framed artworks. His resident production is expected to be drawn using a handmade alloy pen. An art appreciation experience that bypasses words and travels directly from the eyes to the brain, his exhibition is sure to remind us of the indescribable pleasure and profundity of oil painting.

O JUN 展 まんまんちゃん、あん

国際芸術センター青森では、2016年度最初の展覧会として、O JUNによる個展「まんまんちゃん、あん」を開催します。
O JUNは関係性と無関係性、偶然と必然の狭間で出現するイメージを「意味」が発生する前の「モチーフ」として描くという独自のスタイルで注目を集めてきました。見覚え／聞覚えのあるような出来事の断片を思わせる場面、紋章や国旗といった記号化された図像、明瞭な図像と不明瞭な線、強い
画面の余白、画面を縁取る重い鉄のフレームとガラス板などが特徴的な作品は、現代日本の情景を特異な視点で捉えた具象的イメージが、意味深く非日常的な場面へと転換していくようにもみえます。
タイトルの「まんまんちゃん、あん」は、念仏を意味する大阪、関西方面の幼児言葉です。ただしその音は宗教的行為というよりはむしろ、往年の漫才師の決め言葉や子供時代のたわいもない日常と重なり、ほとんど意味をなさない言葉として、本来の意味から乖離し、意味を空中分解させた音として耳に焼き付いていきます。意味と無意味がユーモラスに宙ぶらりんになっている様は、どこかO JUNの作品とも重なっていきます。
本展では、O JUNのこれまでの油彩画や鉄枠で構成された作品をインスタレーション展示するとともに、手製の合金ペンによる直描きドローイングが滞在制作される予定です。
言葉を介さず、目で見たものを脳につなげるような鑑賞体験は、言葉を超えたところにある絵画の面白さとその深遠を再認識させてくれることでしょう。
