ACACでは2016年より、海外のアーティスト・イン・レジデンス（AIR）実施団体と連携し、海外アーティストやキュレーターの受け入れ、日本人アーティストの海外派遣を行ってきました。新たな国際連携の構築を目的として、昨年度は海外を拠点にAIRを運営する団体を対象に連携団体の公募を実施しました。その結果、世界各国から11組の応募があり、その中からスコットランド、オークニー諸島に拠点を持つPier Arts Centreと連携事業を行うことが決定しました。今年度は、ACACおよびPier Arts Centreの双方からアーティストを派遣し合い、滞在制作を行うエクスチェンジプログラムを実施いたします。 本公募にご応募いただいた皆様に、心より感謝申し上げます。今後の展開にも、ぜひご注目ください。

Pier Arts Centreについて
作家であり平和活動家、慈善家であったマーガレット・ガーディナー（1904–2005）によって寄贈された英国美術のコレクションを収蔵、展示する拠点として1979年に設立されたアートセンター。スコットランド北海岸に位置するオークニー諸島、メインランド島の中心地のひとつであるストロムネスを拠点とする。アートギャラリー、美術館、コレクションの作品保管庫を持ち、年間を通じて展覧会やイベントを実施している。また、メインランド島北西部のバーセイでレジデンス施設Linkshouse を運営している。常設コレクションには、20世紀を代表するアーティストであるバーバラ・ヘップワース、ベン・ニコルソン、アルフレッド・ウォリスをはじめ、ショーン・スカリー、エヴァ・ロスチャイルド、オラファー・エリアソンといった現代美術作家の作品が含まれる。また、地元オークニー出身のアーティスト、シルヴィア・ウィシャートやスタンリー・カージターの作品も収蔵している。小規模ながらも、時代を代表する英国美術の優れたコレクションのひとつとして高く評価されており、スコットランドにおいて国家的に重要なコレクションに指定されている。また、同センターはPlusTateの会員でもあり、イギリス国内の美術関連組織とアイディアやスキルを通じた交流を行っている。多彩な企画展やイベントを開催し、市民にラーニングと鑑賞の機会を提供するとともに、地元のアーティスト・コミュニティの中心的存在として、あらゆるキャリア段階のアーティストのサポートを様々なかたちで行っている。

Since 2016, ACAC has been collaborating with international organizations that run Artist-in-Residence (AIR) to host artists and curators from abroad and to send Japanese artists overseas. With the aim of starting new collaboration and building new international partnerships, we conducted an open call last year for organizations based overseas.

As a result, we received 11 applications from around the world. Following a careful selection process, we are pleased to announce that we will be partnering with the Pier Arts Centre, based in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. This year, ACAC and the Pier Arts Centre will conduct an exchange program, in which each institution will send an artist to the other.

About the Pier Arts Centre
The Pier Arts Centre was established in 1979 to provide a home for an important collection of British fine art donated by the author, peace activist and philanthropist Margaret Gardiner (1904 – 2005). Based in Stromness, one of the main towns on the mainland of the Orkney Islands on the north coast of Scotland, the Centre operates an Art Gallery and Museum, home to the permanent collection and a programme of year round exhibitions and events. The Centre also manages the residency facility “Linkshouse” in Birsay on the north west coast of the mainland. The permanent Collection includes works by major 20th Century artists Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis, amongst others, as well as contemporary art by Sean Scully, Eva Rothschild and Olafur Eliasson. The Collection also includes local artists including Sylvia Wishart and Stanley Cursiter. Although small, it is regarded as one of the finest collections of the period in the UK. A Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland, key works are regularly loaned to prominent exhibitions around the world. The Pier Arts Centre is also a member of Plus Tate, a programme that allows the exchange of ideas and skills with a network of visual arts organisations across the UK. Throughout the year, the Centre hosts a diverse range of exhibitions and events, providing opportunities for public learning and engagement with the arts, while also acting as a focal point for the local artistic community by supporting artists in various ways throughout all stages of their careers.
