On TSUJI Kei’s AOMORI-EN (The CIRCLE)

At ACAC, we have presented Aomori–EN (The CIRCLE) by artist TSUJI Kei since 2005. The work is a cylindrical structure consisting of a base and a wall, with an interior space that people can enter.

Made from natural materials, the work—particularly its walls—was conceived from the outset not as something to be preserved permanently, but as a work that would change over time in response to the passage of time and changes in its surrounding environment.

With this in mind, the work has been presented in the forest at ACAC for more than 20 years and has become familiar to and cherished by many visitors.

In recent years, however, the wall has been damaged by heavy snowfall. This prompted us to discuss with the artist whether and how the work should be repaired. Following its installation in 2005, Aomori–EN (The CIRCLE) underwent a re-creation of its interior space in 2017, when the inner wall, which had been covered with brightly colored threads since 2005, were repainted using a mineral pigment called “aka,” incorporating bengara (red iron oxide) from Aomori.

As a result of our discussions with the artist, we decided to remove only the wall in September 2026, leaving the base in place.

The work was conceived, in a sense, as a “device” that creates an interior space through its base and wall, which people can enter. Going forward, we see the remaining “base” as a “stage,” opening up new possibilities for artistic expression.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has visited and enjoyed Aomori–Circle over the years. We plan to develop programs centered around Aomori–Circle in its new form.

Further details will be announced in due course.
