We are pleased to share the profiles and residency plans of Namine Doi and Megumi Barrington Uenoyama, who are participating in the AIR exchange programme jointly organised by ACAC and the Pier Arts Centre (PAC), based in the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Namine Doi

【Profile】
Born in Ishinomaki, Miyagi in 1997, they studied fine arts in the UK for several years starting in 2016. Currently based in Ishinomaki, their cross-disciplinary practice spans contemporary art and music, encompassing sound art, composition, and DJing.

Shaped by roughly 20 years of classical piano training from the age of four, musical experiences within London’s rave and party scene, and life in their native Tohoku region, their work explores the phenomena born in the interstitial space between personal experience and global currents. Directing their gaze toward social and historical contexts, they utilize music and fragmented everyday practices as clues to articulate their expressions.

【Residency Plan】
After staying in Orkney from 2 to 29 October, she plans to continue her research by herself in Edinburgh and London. In Orkney, she will research embodied practices passed down through everyday life, including Kitchen Cèilidh, a social gathering where a temporary dance floor is set up in the kitchen to mark milestones in agricultural work or celebrate special occasions.

She will also interview local residents about their personal experiences, observing the words and sounds that emerge through conversation and exploring the connections between individual lives, local culture, and the environment. Through field recordings, she will further investigate the relationships between nature, language, and music.

Using sound materials collected in her base in Ishinomaki, she will compare the rhythms embedded in Ishinomaki and Orkney. She also plans to explore new forms of expression through jam sessions with local residents.

Megumi Barrington Uenoyama

【Profile】
Megumi is a Japanese artist who lives and works in the Orkney Islands, located in the north of Scotland, UK. Her inspiration reflects both her Japanese heritage and her interest in the landscape and natural history of Orkney. She studied Visual Communication Design at Kyoto Seika University and Painting at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. She has been based at the Wasps Stromness studio since spring 2024. She is a member of Soulisquoy Printmakers and MÓTI Collective, and a board member of the Orkney Japan Association.

【Residency Plan】
She will create print works in response to Aomori’s landscapes, natural history, and seasonal changes. Drawing on the climate and environment of northern regions, as well as the relationship between nature and people, she will explore the connections between Aomori and Orkney.

She will also lead printmaking workshops for local young people to foster their connection with nature.

Having lived in the UK for over 20 years and recently held a solo exhibition in Scotland, she aims to reflect anew on the relationship between her Japanese cultural background and her life in Orkney, and to incorporate these reflections into her future artistic practice.
