Val LEE
台湾を拠点に活動するディレクター、ビジュアルアーティスト。ニューヨーク州立大学で映画制作と社会学を学ぶ。エクスパンデッド・シネマ、大規模なライブアート、参加型パフォーマンスを横断しながら、一時的な状況を構築する実践を展開している。作品では主に、社会的関係性や現代特有の精神状態を主題とする。近年では、中心となる出来事や物語をあえて立ち上げることを避け、その代わりに空間の条件を変容させ、鑑賞者のあり方を再編することで現実の意味を宙づりにする。身体は定まった方向性や意図を持たないまま現れては消え、鑑賞者をフィクションを帯びながらも決定的な解釈を拒む、非線的な場へと誘う。
李のムービングイメージ作品は、ヘイワード・ギャラリー（ロンドン）、SOMA Berlin、Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei（MOCA）、the Vernacular Institute（メキシコ）、Haus der Kulturen der Welt（ベルリン）、ヨーロッパ写真美術館、RPM Film Festival、光州ビエンナーレ、緑島人権芸術祭、Taiwan Art Biennialで展示された。ライブ作品は、台北市立美術館、京都芸術センター、国家両庁院Experimental Theater（台湾）などの文化機関で発表されている。これまで、Hong Foundation、アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル、National Culture and Arts Foundation、台北パフォーミングアーツセンター、山中suplexから支援を受け、2017年には台新芸術賞（ビジュアルアート部門）を受賞した。
Val Lee is a director and visual artist based in Taiwan. Trained in Filmmaking and Sociology at the State University of New York, Lee works across expanded cinema, large-scale live art, and participatory performance to construct temporary situations. The work focuses primarily on social relations and particular states of the contemporary psyche. Recent works often resist establishing a central event or narrative. Instead, Lee transforms spatial conditions and reorganizes structures of spectatorship, leaving the meaning of reality in suspension. Bodies appear and disappear without any fixed direction or intent, drawing viewers into nonlinear fields charged with fiction, yet resistant to definitive interpretation.
Lee’s moving-image works have been exhibited at Hayward Gallery in London, SOMA Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, the Vernacular Institute in Mexico, Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, RPM Film Festival, the Gwangju Biennale, the Green Island Biennial, and the Taiwan Art Biennial. Lee’s live works have been presented at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kyoto Art Center, and the Experimental Theater at the National Theater and Concert Hall in Taiwan, among other institutions. Lee has received support from the Hong Foundation, the Asian Cultural Council, the National Culture and Arts Foundation, the Taipei Performing Arts Center, and Yamanaka Suplex, and received the Taishin Arts Award for Visual Arts in 2017.
