This exhibition catalog showcases three distinct bodies of work that explore the expressive potential of textiles as a medium. FUKUMOTO Shigeki has pursued the unique expressive qualities achievable only through dyeing, drawing insights from the bark cloth (tapa) and woven textiles of Melanesia in the South Pacific, as well as from the formal theories of Oceania and Japan. Meanwhile, FUKUMOTO Shihoko has elevated the transparency and spiritual depth of indigo dyeing into the realm of fine art. In recent years, she has expanded her artistic practice by incorporating aged natural fabrics that were historically crafted and used in regional daily life and labor. Through these works, the exhibition examines the possibilities of textiles as a medium for artistic expression.
This catalog documents the exhibition held at the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, Aomori Public University [ACAC].
