Born in Fukui Prefecture in 1955. Tsuchiya holds a master’s degree in Sculpture from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London. He is a sculptor, environmental design artist, and a professor emeritus at Aichi University of the Arts. Many of his works are based on the twin themes of “location/memory,” and use scraps and ash from abandoned or demolished houses. In addition, Tsuchiya has created several public and site-specific art projects both in Japan and overseas, engaging with the histories, cultures, and environments of each place, as well as the memories of the people who live there. In 2003, he created the outdoor sculpture “Landscape recollection” at ACAC using railroad ties. His major projects include “Utsushiyo no niwa [The gardens of this world]” (2023; Yokokan Garden, Fukui), “Postwar Art in Closeup” (2015; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo), and “Monument in memory of victims of the Tokyo Air Raids and in the pursuit of peace ‘Kioku no basho [A place of memory]’” (2001; Yokoamicho Park, Tokyo). In 1991, Tsuchiya received the grand prize at the 14th Contemporary Japanese Sculpture Exhibition.
