台湾を拠点に演出家、アーティストとして活動する李 奧森（ヴァル・リ）は、日本を含めた台湾国内外で多くのパフォーマンス、映像作品を制作してきました。多くの作品において、非日常的な身体的記憶、都市における暴力や政治的混乱、そして過去に起きた歴史的事象をテーマに、催眠的で夢を見させられているような空間、あるいは現実離れした構造のなかに鑑賞者を招き入れてきました。
李はアジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシルの助成金を得て、昨年の秋に新作制作のため1か月間日本でブラインドサッカーのリサーチを行いました。パラリンピックの正式種目であるブラインドサッカーは、キーパー以外のフィールドプレーヤーがアイマスクをした状態で、ガイドや他のプレーヤーの声を頼りにプレイするスポーツです。近年、暗闇の中で鑑賞するパフォーマンス作品「時間的臨摹 (じかんのりんぼ)」を発表するなど、通常とは異なる視覚状態における実験を重ねてきた李にとって、プレーヤーの身体感覚やコミュニケーションのあり方は、非常に興味深く感じられたと言います。
青森のガルハ青森、沖縄の琉球Agachiといったブラインドサッカーチームへの取材や日本選手権大会の観戦等の取材を経て新作の制作を青森で行うと決めた李は、今年の2月に国際芸術センター青森を拠点に写真インスタレーションの制作を行いました。今回のオンライントークでは、日本での取材経験や青森での制作過程を中心にお話を伺います。

台湾を拠点に活動する演出家、ビジュアルアーティスト。ニューヨーク州立大学で映画制作と社会学をを学び、2008年に鬼丘鬼鏟 (ゴースト・マウンテン・ゴースト・ショベル)を設立。エクスパンデッド・シネマ、パフォーマンス、イメージを横断しながら、空間や観客のあり方を捉え直すような時間的状況を構築する。李の作品は、構造的な暴力、戦争、通常とは異なる感情を主題にしながら、物語の展開そのものではなく、時間が分散し、存在が明滅するような知覚の場を生み出すことに重きを置く。身体は捉えどころなく現れては消え、出来事は宙づりのまま展開する。知覚が遅延したまま、鑑賞者は緊張、曖昧さ、静かな混乱がもたらす非線的な環境へと招き入れる。
李の映像作品は、ヘイワード・ギャラリー（ロンドン）、SOMA Berlin、台北当代芸術館（MOCA）、the Vernacular Institute（メキシコ）、HKW（ベルリン）、グラン・パレ（フランス）、ヨーロッパ写真美術館、光州ビエンナーレ、緑島人権芸術祭、台北ビエンナーレで展示された。パフォーマンス作品は、台北市立美術館、京都芸術センター、国家両庁院、Taipei Arts Festivalなどで上演された。これまで、アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル、Hong Foundation、National Culture and Arts Foundation、Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB)、Australia’s Performance Spaceから支援を受け、2017年には台新芸術賞（ビジュアルアート部門）を受賞した。
Val Lee, a director and artist based in Taiwan, has created performances and video works both in Taiwan and internationally, including Japan. Many of these works focus on themes such as body memories of unusual states,urban violence, political turmoil, and historical events. In these works, Lee invites the audience into spaces that are hypnotic, dreamlike, or surreal structures.
Lee, with the support of a grant from the Asian Cultural Council, conducted research on blind football in Japan for one month in 2024, in preparation for a new work. Blind football, an official sport in the Paralympics, is a game in which field players, except for the goalkeeper, wear eyeshade and rely on the guidance of voices from the guides and other players to play. For Lee, who has previously experimented with different physical conditions, such as the performance “時間的臨摹” held in complete darkness in Kyoto, the physical sensations and methods of communication involved in playing blind football were particularly intriguing.
After interviewing blind football teams such as Garuha Aomori and Ryukyu Agachi, and watching the Japanese Championship, Lee decided to create a new work in Aomori. In February of this year, Lee created a photo works based in Aomori Contemporary Art Center. In this online talk is for sharing insights into Lee’s research experience in Japan and the creation process in Aomori.

Val LEEmore
Val Lee is a director and visual artist based in Taiwan. Trained in Filmmaking and Sociology at the State University of New York, Lee founded Ghost Mountain Ghost Shovel in 2008. Working across expanded cinema, performance, and images, Lee constructs temporal scenarios that reframe spatial conditions and spectatorship. The work explores systemic violence, war, and strange affective states. Rather than centering narrative, Lee creates perceptual fields where time disperses and presence flickers. Bodies appear and withdraw without clear intent, and events unfold in suspension. Perception is held in delay, drawing the viewer into nonlinear environments shaped by tension, ambiguity, and quiet disorientation.
Lee’s video works have been exhibited at Hayward Gallery(London), SOMA Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei, the Vernacular Institute (Mexico), HKW (Berlin), the Grand Palais (France), the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), the Gwangju Biennale, Green Island Biennale and the Taiwan Biennial. Live performances have been staged at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), Kyoto Art Center, the National Theater and Concert Hall (Taiwan), the Taipei Arts Festival, among others. Lee has received support from the Asian Cultural Council, the Hong Foundation, the National Culture and Arts Foundation, Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB), and Australia’s Performance Space, and was awarded the Taishin Arts Award for Visual Arts in 2017.
