Based in Malaysia, LOW Pey Sien is an artist, producer, and curator who has, over time, been exploring ways to express herself through her body.
　　　In March 2020, a nationwide lockdown took place in Malaysia as a measure against COVID-19. While the stay-at-home order was imposed, Low conducted her own self-residence project from April to June, using an art space in which she had worked. Low explored her long-standing interest in self-portraiture and attempted to reflect on the body through photography during this self-residency. Low states she had contemplated her shame about her body, her desire to be bare, and the significance of preserving these emotions on camera.
　　　Originating from this 2020’s project, in her current residency, Low also focuses on Japan’s public bath and hot spring culture.
　　　When soaking in a hot spring, Low feels she herself is no longer there, only her body. She deepens her analysis of the “body” and “embarrassment” as she contemplates those moments in a public place when our mind drifts away, and we are no longer “there”.
　　　The project is a work-in-progress exhibition in which the works will change throughout the exhibition period. The dilemmas and desires of the body, and how the relationship between the body and society has changed, are explored not only through self-portraits, but also through collaboration in workshops and other activities.
