On the final day of the exhibition, artist MAETANI Kai will present a performance inside a building in Shinmachi. ACAC is located at the foot of the Hakkōda Mountains, and artists who wish to go out during their stay typically rely on buses or cars. Maetani, however, has been intentional about moving with his own body—most notably by walking around the Tsugaru Peninsula. For this performance as well, he will walk from ACAC to the venue and begin the work upon arrival.

Throughout his practice, Maetani has explored the relationship between image and body, creating works such as self-portraits and projections onto his own skin. During the workshop held in the course of this residency, he opened up these processes to others, attempting to realize them collectively rather than as a solitary act. He also made use of ACAC’s large exhibition hall as a darkroom at night—a unique first-time experience for him.

Grounded in the accumulation of these activities and lived experiences during the residency, the performance will unfold through movement within the building, using both his body and photographic techniques. It will mark a fitting conclusion to Maetani’s stay at ACAC.
