対岸の火事という言葉があるように、どこかの災厄は、河川や海あるいは峰によって断絶させられます。どれほど人が国や所有という概念で結びつけようとも、その地形によって人の意識と生活は隔てられ、形成されていきます。一方で、私達はメディアでつながることで互いの状況に一喜一憂し、個々の生活を思うことも可能です。このような断絶を超えていくものは、想像力のみだと言えるかもしれません。
イタリア人キュレーター、レアンドロ・ピサノが発表した「田舎未来主義宣言」では、経済・文化・政治の都会中心な構造、そして田舎が周縁的な場所として認識される価値観が見直されるべき、という考えが示されます。エナジー・イン・ルーラル（EIR）もまたこの考えの下、キュレーターとアーティストと共に、青森あるいは南イタリアの地を探索してきました。表現者たちが物事を見出す方法を共有することで、いかに土地のエナジーを発見しうるか、その方法を獲得していくには何ができるのか、思考を進めていきます。
人が暮らす場所において共通するのは、自然環境が、人を隔て、あるいは結びつけること、生活の糧であり、心の拠り所でもあるということでしょう。そのため、ある地域について考えるとき、それは固有のものからの発想であると同時に普遍的な問いへと接続していきます。遠く離れた地のことでさえ他山の石として捉え、私たちが視点を更新していくならば、ある場所に立ち向かう度に、新しい価値を見出しうる機会となるはずです。

The Japanese idiom taigan no kaji (lit. “a fire on the other side of the river”) suggests an issue is someone else’s problem. It refers back to the fact that disasters can be isolated by rivers, seas, and mountain peaks. No matter how much we try to connect through concepts of country and sovereignty, it is the terrain that truly separates and shapes our lives and our awareness of who we are. At the same time, media allows us to empathize with the circumstances of others over long distances and contemplate our own lives. This kind of imagination may be the only thing that can transcend such physical separation.
The “Manifesto of Rural Futurism,” proposed by Italian curator Leandro Pisano, reimagines the urban-centric structure of economy, culture, and politics as well as the marginalization of rural areas as places on the periphery. The Aomori Contemporary Art Centre’s Energies in the Rural (EIR) project has explored this idea with curators and artists in Aomori and Southern Italy. As we share the ways in which creative individuals perceive and interpret the world, we will continue to consider how we can unearth energy from the landscape and what steps we can take to learn these methods.
One common aspect shared by the places people inhabit is that the natural environment can serve as both barrier and connection, providing subsistence and a sanctuary for human activity. That is one reason why specific characteristics inherent to a place can link to universal questions when we think about particular regions. With fresh perspectives, each encounter with a place becomes an opportunity to uncover new values, drawing insights from even the most distant destinations.
